On October 14,
2006, the Board of Directors of the Inland
Lakes Yachting Association (ILYA) provided
good news for the A Class. By unanimous
vote, the directors authorized the building
of carbon fiber composite hulls for the
A-Scow Class. The other exception the board
granted allows the sideboards to be built of
carbon fiber as well.
This decision
affirms the nature of the A Class to allow
for development and innovation. At least
one boat builder is poised to take advantage
of the new ruling-- Minnesota based Victory
by Design, LLC.
With well known
Goetz Custom Boats of Bristol, Rhode Island
lined up to build the hulls, this 38 foot
sport boat is expected to weigh in at 1250
pounds, all up. The spars are constructed of
carbon fiber as well as the rudders. It will
be called the V-38 and will come off the
same molds that produced a fiberglass proof
boat that has been tested over the past 4
seasons. That boat has proven to be
exceedingly well designed and fast by A-scow
standards. The carbon fiber version will
provide a wickedly fast ride for its crew of
5 to 7.
This new ILYA
authorization establishes a sub-class within
the A Class Open Fleet that assures a racing
competition venue for the new lighter-weight
boats. It is likely that the adrenalin
boosting brute speed of this new
light-weight boat will bring sport boat
enthusiasts from around the country to the
spectacular sailing of one of the world's
fastest monohulls.
